More Fossil Defender updates and a small rant

The Fossil Defender Series Guide has been updated with 3 new images. Thanks to a new reader Adam we now have a better image of the DE-1507 and new DE-1505 and DE-1520 pictures, which I didn't have before. Adam also sent some pictures of the original box for his DE-1507.

Planet Fossil: Fifth and final Around the World Series watches

Finally back in action and I wanted to highlight the remaining watches in the Around the World Series. I've already discussed 2 of the 5 watches so far. Here's the breakdown of watches

  1. Captain Fossil Rocket Watch

  2. Cruise-O-Matic

  3. Streamliner

  4. Aero-Pilot

  5. Planet Fossil

The Planet Fossil was released in December 1994 and came with a lapel pin and packaged in a globe theme collectors tin. In my opinion of the 5 watches this is the least attractive to me -- maybe it's because mine doesn't look like the ones in the brochures or maybe because it's been worn and needs a good cleaning. Either way this watch was the last in the Around the World Series and was limited to only 20,000 made.

As with the Captain Fossil watch I am really in love with the tin for this watch. The lid is a piece of art with a young couple staring off into the world. They did a nice job incorporating the "around the world" tagline -- be nice if this tin could be made into a poster. All around the sides of the tin are random pictures of people doing different actions with a globe.

This was the hardest watch for me to find. I don't know what that means as far as collectibility, but it's definitely the oddball in the family.

Watch details:

  • Planet Fossil Limited Edition Collector's Watch.

  • Watch #5 in a 5 item set of Around the World Series.

  • Original cost $70 USD

  • This watch is #7034 of 20000 made

  • Model #LE-9452

Fossil Puzzle

Lately I have been trying to get my hands on some of the non-watch stuff from Fossil. One of the items I saw a few years ago was a Fossil puzzle based on tin 0015C, the tin with the 50's scene and the 1956 Chevy. It took awhile, but I finally came across one with the tin.  I've only seen 3 of these in recent years.

The tin measures 8 inches long by 5 inches wide perfectly. It's a little thick at 1.75 inches deep. The puzzle has over 100 pieces. The only marking on the tin is a model number GB-1003. You're guess is as good as mine. No other markings or advertising is on the item. Would love to know the original cost. In reading a few things online over the years on Fossil, I'd imagine this came as a promotion for buying a watch during the holidays or some other type of promotional period.

Anyone have any more information on this? Any other puzzles made?

1995 Fossil Collectors Club Kit

One of my favorite Fossil Collector's Club kits is the 1995 kit. It came in a pizza box basically filled with many goodies. The box itself is a work of art, hard to display, but it is covered with 50's scenes.

Of all the kits I have this one has the most items. First the paperwork is a gem here. Included was an issue of Fossil Times. According to the brochure I have being part of the club you were entitled to a quarterly newsletter. This newsletter I have is numbered X. On the back of the Fossil Times is the limited edition checklist. Something I posted on here a few months ago.

A brochure of items is also included. A few months ago I posted scans of each page. You can view that post here on the 1995 Fossil Collector's Club brochure. This brochure is very valuable because not much collector's limited edition information is available in print. Some miscellaneous print items also exists such as the membership card and welcome letter to the club. Included also is a Collector's Club pin.

A t'shirt is also included in this kit. I've never seen another shirt made that references the Collector's Club. The shirt only has the logo on the front with no other markings anywhere.

The 1995 Fossil Collector's Club watch is a beautiful piece. Has a timeless design and is very clean. The watch is model number LE 9464.

Fossil Automotive Tins

If you talk about advertising in the 40's and 50's there is no doubt you'll talk about automotive advertising. Some of my favorite items are the various automotive tins from Fossil that I have been able to get in recent years. Below are 4 tins that caught my eye a few months ago on eBay. These tins were produced between 1996 and 1999.

Tin numbers are BRC0158 (upper left), BRC0082 (upper right), BRC0065 (lower left), and BRC0135 (lower right).

Fossil Soccer Club

Being less than 2 weeks away from the start of the 2010 World Cup, I found a nice tie-in to my love of soccer and Fossil watches. This watch is listed in the Fossil Limited Edition Checklist - it was released in May 1994 and had a 20,000 unit run. I wish I would have bought this watch, it recently sold on eBay for $15.50. Reminds me very much of my Cruise-O-Matic watch with the Fossil Authentic dial, full tin and a little pin. Any idea how many Authentic dials exist?

Unique Fossil black watch BQ-8487

I picked this watch up recently and I love it. It's hard to describe what it is. It's not a chronograph, but it has the dials on the face that tell the month, day of the week and the date. I am anxious to get a battery in it and see it go.

I bought this watch because it is closest thing I've seen to that vintage 40's/50's look that I love so much. Best part is I paid $15 for the watch and it came in a nice tin with the original paperwork and sleeve.

The last picture is something I've not seen before and it's just a piece of cardboard that rests in the top of the tin. Not sure of the purpose it served or on what watches/tins they were included with, but click on it and check out the image. Very cool piece of work.

Fossil Tins

Most people when they think of Fossil watches probably think of one thing --- tins. I’ll place money on it. Tin collecting has a life of its own and it’s something I am just now getting started with. Online there are more sites and blogs dedicated to tin collecting than to Fossil watches and memorabilia. It’s pretty amazing the information out there and the passion some of these folks have with tins. I’m hoping to link in with some of those folks later on as I build this site.

Fossil tends to release tins in sets of particular designs. I’ve been finding sets of 4 lately online, meaning 4 of them have the same theme or treatment. Most tins had a numbering scheme with a date, which makes for easier classification. The newer watches I’ve been buying lately do not seem to have any indication of numbering scheme or a specific timeframe, maybe they are bootleg tins or something.

Fossil has released a book called, “Tinspiration” and I’ve tried to order it twice from their corporate site and both times my order is cancelled. So either the book is make believe or they refuse to ship to me anymore, regardless I’ve taken matters in my own hands and bought the book on Amazon for $6.99 with shipping!

I received it the other day and I am spending some time with it before I start posting about tins and tin collecting. It only has the watch tins in the book, so wallet tins and other misc tins are not covered. Pick the book up for yourself -- the back of the book has the most comprehensive and visual guide to tins I've ever seen.

What is up with the Captain Fossil Rocket Watches lately?

I’ve noticed a trend on eBay and I can’t find any proof to the inflated prices on the Captain Fossil Rocket watches from the Around the World Series. Within the past few months the asking prices for these watches range from $100-$375. Do they sell?
